Accepted Forms of Identification for Notary Services

To protect all parties and comply with Florida law, every signer must provide acceptable identification before a document can be notarized.

Whether your appointment is in person or through Remote Online Notarization (RON), identity verification is required before any notarization can be completed.

Commonly Accepted Forms of Identification

The following are examples of commonly accepted government-issued photo identification under Florida law:

  • Florida Driver License

  • Driver License issued by another U.S. state or U.S. territory

  • Florida Identification Card

  • State Identification Card issued by another U.S. state or territory

  • United States Passport or Passport Card

  • Foreign Passport (when permitted under Florida law)

  • United States Military Identification Card

  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

  • Veteran Health Identification Card

  • Other government-issued identification authorized by Florida law

Your Identification Must

To be accepted, your identification should:

  • Be issued by a government agency.

  • Include a recognizable photograph of the signer.

  • Include the signer's signature (when applicable).

  • Reasonably identify the person signing the document.

  • Be current or otherwise acceptable under Florida law.

If your identification is damaged, altered, illegible, or cannot reasonably establish your identity, the notarization may need to be declined.

Name Differences

The name on your identification should closely match the name on the document being notarized.

Minor differences may be acceptable depending on the circumstances, but significant name discrepancies may require additional documentation before the notarization can proceed.

Expired Identification

Florida law allows certain expired forms of identification under specific circumstances.

Because acceptance depends on the type of ID and how long it has been expired, please contact us in advance if your identification is no longer current. We will gladly let you know whether it may be accepted.

Remote Online Notarization (RON)

For Remote Online Notarization appointments, your identity will also be verified through a secure online identity verification process, which may include:

  • Credential analysis of your government-issued ID

  • Identity verification questions (Knowledge-Based Authentication), when required

  • Live audio-video verification with the notary

Failure to successfully complete the required verification process may prevent the notarization from proceeding.

Unacceptable Forms of Identification

The following are generally not accepted as primary identification for notarization:

  • Employer identification cards

  • School or student identification cards

  • Library cards

  • Credit or debit cards

  • Birth certificates

  • Social Security cards

  • Membership cards

  • Photocopies or digital images of identification

  • Expired identification that does not meet Florida legal requirements

Please Bring Your Identification

To avoid delays or rescheduling, please have your identification ready before your appointment begins.

For mobile appointments, have your ID available when the notary arrives.

For Remote Online Notarization appointments, have your physical government-issued ID available to present to the camera during the verification process.

What forms of identification do you accept?

Do you prepare legal documents?

No.

Rola Notary notarizes documents provided by our clients. We do not prepare legal documents or provide legal advice.
Do all signers need to be present?

Yes.

Every person whose signature requires notarization must personally appear before the notary, either:


  • In person for Mobile Notary appointments, or

  • Through a live online video session for Remote Online Notarization.
Can you refuse to notarize a document?

Yes.

A notarization may be refused if:


  • Proper identification cannot be verified.

  • A signer appears unwilling or under pressure.

  • A signer does not appear mentally aware.

  • The document is incomplete where completion is required before notarization.

  • The notarization would violate Florida law.
Where do you travel?

Travel fees may apply depending on distance.
Can you meet at a hospital or nursing home?

Yes.

We frequently assist clients in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospice settings.

Please ensure the signer is alert, willing, and able to communicate.
Do you offer same-day appointments?

Yes, when available.

Emergency, after-hours, weekend, and same-day appointments may include additional service fees.
What is Remote Online Notarization?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) allows documents to be notarized electronically through a secure live audio/video session without meeting in person.
Is Remote Online Notarization legal?

Yes.

Florida law permits commissioned Remote Online Notaries to perform online notarizations using approved technology and identity verification procedures.
Can I use RON if I'm outside Florida?

Yes.

In many cases, you may be located outside Florida during the appointment, provided the notarization complies with Florida law and the document is eligible for remote notarization.
What do I need for a RON appointment?

You should have:


  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone

  • Reliable internet connection

  • Camera and microphone

  • Valid government-issued photo ID

  • Documents uploaded before your appointment
How long does a Remote Online Notary appointment take?

Most appointments take approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the number of documents, signers, and identity verification.
Can multiple people sign during one appointment?

Yes.

Additional signer fees may apply for each additional participant.
Can I notarize paper documents online?

No.

RON is designed for electronic documents that are signed electronically during the online session.
How much does notarization cost?

Pricing depends on the type of service requested.

What are additional signatures?

An additional signature fee applies when the same signer requires multiple notarized signatures during the same appointment.
What is an additional signer?

An additional signer is another individual participating in the appointment who also requires notarization.

Each additional signer requires identity verification and separate notarization.
Are travel fees included?

Travel fees apply only to Mobile Notary appointments and vary by travel distance.

Remote Online Notarization does not include travel fees.
Can I upload documents before my appointment?

Yes.

Please upload all required documents before your scheduled appointment to avoid delays.
Can I sign before the appointment?

No.

Unless specifically instructed otherwise, documents requiring notarization should be signed in the presence of the notary.
What happens if I am late?

Late arrivals may require rescheduling depending on availability.
